UW Carbone Cancer Center treats patients with MRIdian MRI-guided radiation therapy system

The MRIdian (me-rid-i-an) system from ViewRay, a privately held medical device company, is now being used to treat patients at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center in Madison, Wisconsin, the second clinical group in the world to treat patients with MRI-guided radiation therapy.

Beta-O2 receives grant from JDRF to study ßAir bio-artificial pancreas for treatment of T1D

Beta-O2 announced today that it has received a $500K grant from JDRF. The grant will be used to help fund a $1M pilot human study of Beta-O2's ßAir bio-artificial pancreas, in development as a treatment and potential cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D).

An expert panel has created a new evidence-based guideline for managing sickle cell disease (SCD), with a strong recommendation for the use of the drug hydroxyurea and transfusion therapy for many individuals with SCD, although high-quality evidence is limited, with few randomized clinical trials conducted for this disease, according to an article in the September 10 issue of JAMA.

Belgian receives research grant from Jeffrey Modell to help cure IPEX syndrome

For the first time the Jeffrey Modell Foundation is giving a research grant to a Belgian laboratory. The team of Adrian Liston from VIB-KU Leuven will use the grant to develop a gene therapy to cure children that suffer from IPEX syndrome, a rare and fatal autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the body's own tissues and organs.
