The drug discovery process begins with recognizing a disease or clinical condition in which there is a lack of adequate medical treatment. Once a potential drug has been identified, pre-clinical research can begin. This process includes several stages; the first of which involves identifying and validating the prospective drug’s target through assay development, high throughput screening, hit identification and finally, lead optimization. Once the pre-clinical process is complete, the newly synthesized drug candidate is selected for future clinical development.

FDA accepts Blueprint Medicines' IND applications to start Phase 1 clinical trials for two drug candidates

Blueprint Medicines today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration accepted the Company's Investigational New Drug (IND) applications to begin Phase 1 clinical trials for its two lead drug candidates: BLU-554 for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma, and BLU-285 for unresectable, treatment-resistant gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).

Globavir agrees to exclusively license novel oncology compound to Sorrento Therapeutics

Globavir Biosciences, Inc., a specialty biotechnology company developing small molecule drugs to treat cancer and infectious diseases, and Sorrento Therapeutics, Inc., an oncology company developing new treatments for cancer and associated pain, announced today that the companies have entered into an agreement under which Globavir exclusively licensed its novel oncology compound, BC001, to Sorrento Therapeutics.

Johns Hopkins, IOCB Prague sign drug discovery research agreement

The Johns Hopkins Drug Discovery (JHDD) program, created with the mission of identifying novel drug targets arising from Johns Hopkins faculty research and translating them into new therapeutics, and the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, The Czech Academy of Sciences (IOCB Prague) have entered into a five-year drug discovery research agreement to develop small-molecule and peptide drugs for a range of therapeutic areas including neurological diseases, cancer and gastrointestinal disorders.

UC San Diego, GSK collaborate to treat leukemia by eliminating cancer stem cells

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center are working with GSK on a bench-to-bedside project to treat leukemia and other diseases by eliminating cancer stem cells. The collaboration is part of GSK's Discovery Partnerships with Academia (DPAc) program, where academic partners become core members of drug-hunting teams.
