At the annual Midyear Clinical Meeting of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), Cardinal Health will launch a new service that helps hospitals and integrated delivery networks expand the reach of their outpatient pharmacies, while also generating additional revenue and freeing up pharmacist time to drive medication adherence and other quality measures.

Study uncovers novel mechanism by which glioblastoma evades targeted therapies

A Ludwig Cancer Research study has uncovered an entirely novel mechanism by which glioblastoma, the most common kind of brain cancer, evades targeted therapies. Published in the current issue of the journal Science, the paper describes how GBM tumor cells essentially hide the signaling molecule targeted by such therapies, adding a layer of complexity to current models of drug resistance in cancer.

Sorin Group, a global medical company and a leader in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, announced today that the INTENSIA family of implantable cardioverter defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy devices received CE (Conformité Européenne) mark approval. Study reveals that brain cancer cells resist therapy by dialing down gene mutation targeted by drugs

A team of scientists, led by principal investigator Paul S. Mischel, MD, a member of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, has found that brain cancer cells resist therapy by dialing down the gene mutation targeted by drugs, then re-amplify that growth-promoting mutation after therapy has stopped.

Researchers take closer look at genetically engineered mouse models and human cancer samples

Researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA have taken a closer look at existing mouse models of cancer, specifically comparing them to human cancer samples. These genetically engineered mouse models (which usually either overexpress a cancer-causing gene-or "oncogene"-or carry a deletion for a "tumor suppressor" gene) have been extensively used to understand human cancer biology in studies of drug resistance, early detection, metastasis, and cancer prevention, as well as for the preclinical development of novel targeted therapeutics.

Combination of preventive and therapeutic moxibustion has beneficial effect for Alzheimer's disease

An increasing number of clinical and animal studies have confirmed that acupuncture is effective for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Moxibustion is reported to be more effective than electro-acupuncture for improving space-recognizing memory ability in aged mice, suggesting that moxibustion is another alternative or complementary therapy used to treat Alzheimer's disease.

Long-term ECG may help patients suffering from chronic cardiac insufficiency

Patients suffering from cardiac diseases may rapidly become emergencies. Then, seconds decide about life and death. However, many cardiac diseases are announced several months before. Symptoms are simply overlooked. A long-term ECG may help. A sensor belt developed at KIT for the first time allows to document cardiac activity of a patient over a long term all around the clock for up to six months. The sensor belt is now presented by the researchers at the Medica trade fair in Düsseldorf.

St. Jude Medical evaluates effectiveness of PNfS and SCS for chronic low back and leg pain

St. Jude Medical, Inc., a global medical device company, has launched a clinical study to evaluate the combination of peripheral nerve field stimulation, and spinal cord stimulation, to determine whether the two therapies together offer more effective management of chronic low back and leg pain than SCS alone. The first patient in the SENSE Subcutaneous and Epidural Neuromodulation System Evaluation study was enrolled by Dr. Thomas Yearwood, an interventional pain physician at Comprehensive Pain & Rehabilitation in Pascagoula, Miss.
