New theory challenges orthodox view that cancer develops in each host by mutational accidents

A new way to look at cancer -- by tracing its deep evolutionary roots to the dawn of multicellularity more than a billion years ago -- has been proposed by Paul Davies of Arizona State University's Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science in collaboration with Charles Lineweaver of the Australian National University.

State highlights: N.Y. expects $20M savings with psychiatric care overhaul; $4M settlement in Mich. over heart procedures

New York plans to overhaul its psychiatric services over the next four years by consolidating 24 inpatient hospitals into 15 regional centers and establishing two dozen outpatient hubs. The plan released to The Associated Press by the Office of Mental Health on Wednesday begins in 2014 and is expected to save $20 million the first year (7/10).

Healthcare system factors may play a role in racial disparities related to kidney failure

Among patients with kidney disease who received specialized pre-dialysis care in a universal healthcare system, blacks experienced faster disease progression than whites, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN). The findings suggest that healthcare system factors have less influence on black-white disparities in kidney function decline than other factors.

The first patient in a cellular immunotherapy Phase 1 cancer trial at Seattle Children's has had a positive response to T-cell therapy. The 23-year-old patient, Lynsie Conradi, from Bellingham, Wash. received the welcome news yesterday.

Researchers in the Antibody and Vaccine Group have developed two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) called anti-4-1BB and anti-CD40 and investigated a third called anti-CTLA-4. Each of these antibodies binds to a different target molecule in the immune system, potentially heightening the body's own immune response to cancer.
