Wiley expands partnership with EMBO

John Wiley & Sons, Inc., today announced that it will provide editorial production, global marketing and distribution services for The EMBO Journal, EMBO reports and Molecular Systems Biology. This expanded partnership with EMBO adds three leading scientific journals alongside EMBO Molecular Medicine, which Wiley has published since 2009.

Fat recycling system may provide target for future diabetes therapies

The pancreas is a large organ that wraps around our gut, and produces the exact amount of insulin our bodies need when we eat - except when we start to develop diabetes, and insulin production slows down. Sydney scientists describe how a fat recycling system within pancreatic 'beta cells' determines the amount of insulin they secrete, and so may provide a target for future diabetes therapies.

Study confirms the "seed and soil" theory of metastasis

Oncologists have long puzzled over the fact that after cancer treatment, single cancer cells that are dispersed throughout the body - so-called disseminated tumor cells - are quick to grow and form secondary tumors called metastases in certain organs, while in other organs they metastasize more slowly, sometimes decades later. Such is the case with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cells, which remain dormant when lodged in bone marrow but rapidly form tumors when they make their way into the lungs.

NTU launches new CryoEM lab equipped with advanced cryo transmission electron microscope

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) today launched a new electron microscopy lab led by world renowned scientist Professor Daniela Rhodes. Named the NTU Cryo-Electron Microscopy Laboratory, it is also the world's first university research facility to be equipped with an advanced cryo transmission electron microscope fitted with the latest detector/camera ten times more sensitive than a regular electron microscopy camera.

Rice University research reveals 3-way genetic switch for cancer metastasis

Cancer researchers from Rice University have deciphered the operating principles of a genetic switch that cancer cells use to decide when to metastasize and invade other parts of the body. The study found that the on-off switch's dynamics also allows a third choice that lies somewhere between "on" and "off." The extra setting both explains previously confusing experimental results and opens the door to new avenues of cancer treatment.

Researchers discover how Fra-1 protein protects the liver from drug-induced liver damage

Drug abuse and alcohol are some of the most frequent causes of liver damage, particularly in developed countries. Such kind of liver damage can cause irreversible liver failure and even cancer.
