New guidance for blood pressure monitoring

Blood pressure has been measured and recorded in the same way for nearly a century. This is set to change. Researchers believe that the earlier way has led to the misdiagnosis of many. This could be due to a phenomenon called “white coat hypertension” or rise in the blood pressure due to nervousness on meeting the medical staff. It is seen that at least 25% of the population suffers from white coat hypertension.

H1N1 vaccine safe, effective for hemodialysis and kidney transplant patients

When the influenza A (H1N1) virus swept around the world in spring 2009, infection was presumed to be more common in immunosuppressed patients, such as those who have had a kidney transplant. Later that year, the International Societies of Transplantation recommended that transplant recipients receive at least one dose of the H1N1 vaccine, although there was no information on the efficacy of the vaccine in that population.

Metabolic syndrome comprises a group of medical disorders that increase people's risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and premature death when they occur together. A patient is diagnosed with the syndrome when he or she exhibits three or more of the following characteristics: high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat in the waist/abdomen, low good cholesterol, and higher levels of fatty acids.
