MSI Surgical Solutions adds three new autoclaves to expand ETO sterilization capabilities

MSI Surgical Solutions, an Empire Investment Holdings company, announced today that it has expanded its ETO (Ethylene Oxide) sterilization capabilities through the addition of three new autoclaves. ETO machines are critical in the sterilization of both disposable and reusable items made of rubber or paper products, items that are sensitive to heat or moisture and medical device components including probes, scopes, tubes, cords, wires and leads.

New research shows microdebrider technique has lowest overall complication rate

In a review of three different surgical techniques commonly used for tonsillectomy, the microdebrider technique (where a rotary cutting tool is used to shave tissue) had the lowest overall complication rate when compared to the other two techniques. The results are shown in new research published in the June 2010 issue of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

FDA warns consumers not to purchase or use Arrow Brand Medicated Oil & Embrocation

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned consumers not to purchase or use a product called "Arrow Brand Medicated Oil & Embrocation," also labeled as "Aceite Medicinal La Flecha (Spanish) or "箭嘜驅風油 (Mandarin)." The product is potentially toxic and contains two substances, methyl salicylate and camphor, which are poisonous when ingested.

Excessive amounts of HSP10 inside mitochondria can halt body's ageing process: Researchers

HSP10 (Heat Shock Protein), helps monitor and organise protein interactions in the body, and responds to environmental stresses, such as exercise and infection, by increasing its production inside cells. Researchers at Liverpool, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of California, found that excessive amounts of HSP10 inside mitochondria - 'organs' that act as energy generators in cells - can halt the body's ageing process by preserving muscle strength.

A new study presented at the CleanMed conference in Baltimore this week shows how hospitals, which account for four percent of all energy consumed in the U.S., can achieve a 60 percent reduction in energy utility use by redesigning the way they use energy.
