Tissue-engineered blood vessels from donor skin cells successfully implanted in patients

For the first time, blood vessels created in the lab from donor skin cells were successfully implanted in patients. Functioning blood vessels that aren't rejected by the immune system could be used to make durable shunts for kidney dialysis, and potentially to improve treatment for children with heart defects and adults needing coronary or other bypass graft surgery.

Amgen files sBLA for XGEVA with FDA to treat castrate-resistant prostate cancer

Amgen today announced the submission of a supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expand the indication for XGEVA (denosumab) to treat men with castrate-resistant prostate cancer to reduce the risk of developing bone metastases.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued new warnings for anemia drugs for patients with kidney disease after studies suggested such drugs could increase stroke risks. The new warnings are the latest to hit the widely used medications since 2007, when the FDA first said they could cause fatal side effects.

New bardoxolone methyl Phase 2 trial data on kidney disease, diabetes presented at ERA-EDTA 2011

New Phase 2 clinical trial data published online today in The New England Journal of Medicine show that patients with moderate to severe chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes receiving bardoxolone methyl for 52 weeks experienced a sustained improvement in kidney function throughout the treatment period, as measured by estimated glomerular filtration rate.
