FDA grants marketing approval for CSL Behring's Berinert C1-Esterase Inhibitor

CSL Behring announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted marketing approval for Berinert® C1-Esterase Inhibitor, Human for the treatment of acute abdominal or facial attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare and serious genetic disorder, in adult and adolescent patients. Berinert is the first and only therapy approved for this indication in the U.S.

BIO disagrees with recommendations of the draft report on Gene Patenting and Licensing

The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) provided comments yesterday to the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society regarding its draft report on Gene Patenting and Licensing and Their Impact on Patient Access to Genetic Tests. The report makes several recommendations that would restrict the ability to obtain or undermine the enforceability of patents and exclusive licenses with respect to genetic tests.

New journal focuses on therapeutic hypothermia and its applications in cardiology and neurotrauma

Therapeutic Hypothermia, a new online open access peer-reviewed journal, will focus on medical treatment which lowers a patient's body temperature to help reduce the risk of ischemic injury to tissues following a period of insufficient blood flow.

Sahlgrenska researchers identify special protein that defends against stomach ulcer bacterium

A special protein in the lining of the stomach has been shown to be an important part of the body's defence against the stomach ulcer bacterium Helicobacter pylori in a new study from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. The discovery may explain why the bacterium makes some people more ill than others.

Women with a deleterious gene mutation are diagnosed with breast cancer six years earlier than relatives of the previous generation who also had the disease and/or ovarian cancer, according to new research from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Study shows the impact of blood cell development on human diseases

A new genome-wide association study published today in Nature Genetics begins to uncover the basis of genetic variations in eight blood measurements and the impact those variants can have on common human diseases. Blood measurements, including the number and volume of cells in the blood, are routinely used to diagnose a wide range of disorders, including anaemia, infection and blood cell cancers.
