Hematology includes the study of etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of blood diseases.

ImmunoGen's SAR3419 holds hope for B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

ImmunoGen, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company that develops targeted anticancer therapeutics, today announced the presentation of encouraging initial clinical findings with SAR3419 at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) 51st Annual Meeting and Exposition. Among the findings reported were responses to SAR3419 – administered as a single agent – among patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that is refractory to treatment with rituximab (Rituxan®).

Study results comparing REVLIMID regimen to stem cell transplant in multiple myeloma patients

Celgene International Sàrl announced clinical data from an investigational study of patients with multiple myeloma who were younger than 65 years old and received either REVLIMID (lenalidomide), melphalan and prednisone (MPR) or melphalan plus autologous stem cell transplant (MEL200) following an induction treatment of REVLIMID plus low-dose dexamethasone (Rd) were presented during the 51st American Society of Hematology’s annual meeting in New Orleans, LA.

Defibrotide drug effective against hepatic veno-occlusive disease

Defibrotide, a novel drug which modulates the response of blood vessels to injury, was markedly more effective than standard treatment in post-stem cell transplant patients with hepatic veno-occlusive disease, a life threatening toxicity of transplant caused by blockages in tiny blood vessels of the liver, according to a study led by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute scientists.

Combination of chemotherapy and midostaurin drug may benefit AML patients with FLT3 mutations

CAM314 randomized Phase 3 clinical trial results released

Genzyme Corporation announced data from its CAM314 randomized Phase 3 clinical trial comparing Campath (alemtuzumab) in combination with Fludara (fludarabine phosphate) (FluCAM) to Fludara alone in patients with relapsed and refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) demonstrated that the FluCAM regimen significantly reduced the risk of disease progression or death compared to single-agent Fludara.

New bone marrow transplantation technique shows prompt immune recovery

Although bone marrow transplants have long been standard for acute leukemia, current treatments still rely on exact matches between donor and patient. Now, scientists at the University of Perugia, Italy, and the Weizmann Institute of Science have improved on a method of transplanting bone marrow-based stem cells from a mismatched donor, making it safer for use when no exact match exists.
