Scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University have determined the crystal structures of two key fluorescent proteins - one blue, one red - used to "light up" molecules in cells.

Coronary CTA can be alternative, non-invasive diagnostic imaging test to triage CAD patients: Study

Non-invasive coronary computed tomography angiography is a cost-effective alternative to invasive cardiac catheterization in the care of patients who have positive stress test results but a less than 50 percent chance of actually having significant coronary artery disease, according to a study in the May issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology.

Protocol adjustments based upon weight can help lower radiation dose for pediatric chest CT scans

Adjusting the radiation dose based upon a child's weight can significantly lower the radiation dose associated with pediatric chest computed tomography (CT) scans, according to a study published in the May issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology (www.ajronline.org). CT scanning combines special X-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body.

Framingham risk assessment tool fails to predict patients with suspected CAD: Study

If patients with suspected coronary artery disease are excluded from further screening because of a low Framingham score, many patients with substantial atherosclerosis (a build-up of plaque inside the arteries) will be missed, according to a study published in the May issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology.

Women who have a breast density of 75 percent or higher on a mammogram have a risk of breast cancer that is four to five times greater than that of women with little or no density, making mammographic breast density one of the strongest biomarkers of breast cancer risk.

EOS shows better image quality compared to CR x-ray system: Clinical study

biospace med announced today that a 50-patient clinical study published in the current issue of the peer-reviewed medical journal Spine demonstrates that the Company's ultra-low-dose 2D/3D imaging system, EOS, shows "significantly better" image quality compared to a CR (Computed Radiography) x-ray system while "substantially reducing (a) patient's (radiation) dose exposure" by up to 9 times (89%) compared to CR imaging.

Embryos with two mums to remove the risk of hereditary diseases: new research

New research published in the journal Nature, could pave the way to world’s first genetically modified human baby. The research involves making embryos with genes from one man and two women. There are hundreds or families around the world who are left childless or have serious ill babies because they carry genes for hereditary illnesses. This research may bring hope to such couples. According to scientists on the team, within the next three years these women will be able to avail such techniques. There has been skepticism regarding ethical issues attached to making of “designer babies”.
