20th annual edition of NCCN Guidelines for Breast Cancer published

Study affirms new standard for detecting melanoma metastasis to the lymph nodes

Long-term research that was initiated at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center on lymphatic mapping and sentinel-node biopsy, techniques for detecting the earliest spread (metastasis) of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, has confirmed that these techniques significantly prolong patients' disease-free and melanoma-specific survival over the traditional observational "watch and wait" techniques.

Treatment of pelvic nodes individualized by inclusion of sentinel nodes can be easily integrated into an IMRT-based treatment strategy, according to the new study conducted by a group of researchers from T-bingen and Munich in Germany. The target volume concept seems to correctly cover individual pelvic nodes, which is indicated by the absence of any nodal recurrence within five years of follow-up.

A team of surgeons and members of the breast cancer program of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center is conducting a two-year pilot study of an innovative microsurgery technique coupled with imaging technology to not only prevent lymphedema but also potentially detect and treat it early.

EORTC survey looks at common practices in melanoma surgery

The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) has conducted an international survey of 75 melanoma centres on their behaviours and practices. The survey, which was conducted between 2003-2005, looked at common surgical practices in melanoma surgery (resection margins, sentinel node biopsy and lymph node dissection), as well as surgical management of distant metastases and the use of Isolate Limb Perfusion.
