U.N. to formally establish new 'gender entity'

The U.N. General Assembly will move to formally adopt a new "gender entity" on Friday called "U.N. Women" that will fold the U.N.'s four existing women's entities - UNIFEM, the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues, the U.N. Division for the Advancement of Women and INSTRAW - into one, Inter Press Service reports.

American Airlines Credit Union donates $50,000 from golf tournament to Children's Miracle Network

AA Credit Union proudly presented the Children's Miracle Network with a $50,000 donation as a result of the 14th Annual American Airlines Federal Credit Union Golf Tournament, which took place May 14 at the Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas. The total donation will be split between Cook Children's Medical Center and Children's Medical Center Dallas.

The G8's $5-billion initiative to improve maternal and child health "left many loose ends that need to be tied up before the countries can begin to make good on their commitment to save the lives of 1.3 million children under age five, and 64,000 mothers," the Canadian Press/Globe and Mail reports. According to the article, while stakeholders welcome the G8 initiative, many find it "deeply underfunded and lacking in detail."

Eli Lilly and Company and Alnara Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced they have signed a definitive merger agreement whereby Lilly will acquire Alnara, a privately held biotechnology company developing protein therapeutics for the treatment of metabolic diseases. Alnara's lead product in development is liprotamase, a non-porcine pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT).

Two questions to identify families whose young children suffer from hunger

Asking parents just two simple screening questions could help health care providers and social workers to easily and quickly identify families whose young children are suffering from hunger, enabling early interventions that could prevent serious health consequences, according to a new study led by University of Maryland School of Medicine researchers. The study, published July 1 in the journal Pediatrics, analyzed data gathered from more than 30,000 families nationwide, about a quarter of whom suffered from hunger.
