HCRI, MAHVI present transcatheter aortic valve data in severe stenosis at ACC meeting

The Harvard Clinical Research Institute and Saint Luke's Mid America Heart and Vascular Institute today announced that Matthew R. Reynolds, M.D., Director of the Economics and Quality of Life Research Center at HCRI, presented results of a cost-effectiveness analysis of transcatheter aortic valve replacement versus standard therapy for severe aortic stenosis, as part of the opening plenary session on April 3 at the American College of Cardiology 60th Annual Scientific Session & Expo.

Acamprosate can help treat patients with autism, Fragile X syndrome

In small, early clinical trials, adults and children with autism and Fragile X syndrome have shown improved communication and social behavior when treated with acamprosate, according to Craig Erickson, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry at the Indiana University School of Medicine and chief of the Riley Hospital for Children Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center at Indiana University Health.

Cedars-Sinai receives $750,000 grant from Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy for sildenafil/taladafil study

Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) – the largest, most comprehensive non-profit organization in the United States focused on finding a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Duchenne) – announced today that they will award Ronald G. Victor, M.D. of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a $750,000 grant to fund his study of phosphodiesterase inhibitors (sildenafil and taladafil) as a possible therapy for Duchenne.

AGA guidelines recommend RFA for removal of precancerous cells in patients with Barrett's esophagus

New guidelines issued by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) support the use of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to remove precancerous cells in patients with Barrett's esophagus, a condition most commonly caused by chronic acid reflux, or GERD. Barrett's esophagus is the leading cause of esophageal cancer and affects an estimated two million Americans.
