Illumina and University of Oxford collaborate to sequence whole genomes

Illumina, Inc. today announced it will collaborate with the University of Oxford to sequence the whole genomes of 500 individuals afflicted with a range of life-threatening diseases that pose major challenges in diagnosis, treatment, and care. Illumina HiSeq™ 2000 systems will be used to generate sequence data for the 500 genomes.

Illumina board authorizes new $100 million share repurchase program

Illumina today announced that on August 1, 2011, its Board of Directors authorized the Company to repurchase, on a discretionary basis, up to $100 million of its outstanding common shares in the open market or in privately negotiated transactions, subject to market conditions and other factors. The previous discretionary $100 million share repurchase program authorized in July 2010 was completed this week.

About 50 to 60 percent of patients with melanoma have a mutation in the BRAF gene that drives the growth of their cancer. Most of these patients respond well to two novel agents being studied in clinical trials that inhibit the gene, with remarkable responses that are, unfortunately, almost always limited in duration.

Mood-related brain protein linked to sadness during cigarette withdrawal

Heavy smokers may experience sadness after quitting because early withdrawal leads to an increase in the mood-related brain protein monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), a new study by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) has shown. This finding, which was published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, may also explain why heavy smokers are at high risk for clinical depression.
