Pantec Biosolutions AG, a privately-owned company developing innovative technologies for transdermal drug delivery, today announced the closing of a CHF 20 million investment achieved by two financing rounds. The StemCell Holding AG, an Austrian investment company in the life sciences sector, acted as lead investor.

Archer Biosciences initiates third drug-escalation cohort in TPI-287 trial for metastatic melanoma

Archer Biosciences, Inc. announced that the trial of its novel, proprietary drug TPI-287 (an abeotaxane) for the treatment of metastatic melanoma has initiated a third drug-escalation cohort. The primary objective of this study is to determine the safety, tolerability and maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of TPI-287 in combination with temozolomide (TMZ) in adult patients with metastatic melanoma.

Johnson & Johnson second-quarter sales increase 0.6% to $15.3 billion

Johnson & Johnson today announced sales of $15.3 billion for the second quarter of 2010, an increase of 0.6% as compared to the second quarter of 2009. Operational results increased 0.1% and the positive impact of currency was 0.5%. Domestic sales declined 2.8%, while international sales increased 4.1%, reflecting operational growth of 3.0% and a positive currency impact of 1.1%.

Only 51% of HIV-exposed infants received minimal dose of prevention drug nevirapine: Study

In the ongoing battle to prevent mother-to-child transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), not all weapons are being used: Only about half of HIV-exposed infants in some African countries received a minimal dose of the prevention drug nevirapine, say researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

ASTRO accepts 4 abstracts on Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for NSCLC

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has accepted four abstracts from users of Elekta Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) technology on the use of SBRT to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The clinicians will present their findings during presentations at ASTRO's 52nd Annual Meeting (October 31 - November 4) at the San Diego Convention Center.

Argos' Arcelis immunotherapy reduces viral load in interim analysis of Phase 2 HIV trial

Argos Therapeutics today announced that, in an interim analysis of a Phase 2 trial, its Arcelis immunotherapy targeted at HIV, AGS-004, demonstrated a significant reduction in viral load and a delay in viral rebound kinetics during a 12-week antiretroviral treatment interruption (ARTI) when compared to pre-ART viral loads.

MDMA (Ecstasy) holds promise for chronic treatment-resistant PTSD

MDMA (-3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, also known as Ecstasy), may one day offer hope for individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), even people for whom other treatments have failed. Clinical trial results out today in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, published by SAGE, suggests that MDMA can be administered to subjects with PTSD without evidence of harm and could offer sufferers a vital window with reduced fear responses where psychotherapy can take effect.

Case Western Reserve awarded $0.5M for study of breast cancer in older women

Cynthia Owusu, MD, associate professor at Case Western Reserve University and geriatric-oncologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, the School's primary affiliate, has received nearly $500,000 from Susan G. Komen For the Cure to fund a novel three-year study aimed at improving outcomes for older women with newly-diagnosed breast cancer.

BC-CfE study suggests HAART may prevent transmission, spread of HIV

The BC Centre of Excellence in HIV/AIDS published an important study today in the globally respected Lancet medical journal. The study strongly reinforces the view that the benefits of highly active antiretroviral therapy extend beyond treatment of the virus to significantly preventing the transmission and spread of HIV.

"Treating HIV patients with cocktails of AIDS drugs helps to stop them spreading the infection further and more than halved the number of new HIV diagnoses in a study in Canada, scientists said on Sunday," Reuters reports.

N.Y. health officials increase tanning regulations; Colo. extends review of premium increases; Some small Mass. businesses dropping coverage

The Associated Press: "New York health officials are ramping up their regulation of more than 2,000 tanning salons and gyms offering indoor ultraviolet rays even as health advocates push for a law banning exposure by anyone under 18. … Last year, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified tanning as a definite human carcinogen, putting it in the same category as smoking.

T-SPOT.TB test predicts TB infected persons better than TST: Study

The authors of a recent study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine concluded that the T-SPOT.TB test is better than the tuberculin skin test at predicting which patients will develop active TB.

Abbott presents 48-week PROGRESS study results at 28th International AIDS Conference

Abbott today presented 48-week findings comparing an HIV regimen of its protease inhibitor (PI), Kaletra® (lopinavir/ritonavir), and Merck's integrase inhibitor, Isentress® (raltegravir), to a traditional HIV regimen of Kaletra and the nucleotide/nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) in Truvada® (tenofovir and emtricitabine) in antiretroviral-naive adult patients. Efficacy data were collected over the first 48 weeks of the 96-week PROGRESS (PROtease/InteGRasE Simplification Study) study.

Benefits of drug L-methionine for neurogenic bladder disorders unclear

It is unclear whether patients with neurogenic bladder disorders benefit from the drug L-methionine. The only study currently available provides neither proof of benefit nor proof of harm. This is the result of a report published by the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) on 12 July 2010.
