Smith & Nephew disappointed with jury findings over RENASYS-F Dressing Kit patent litigation

The Advanced Wound Management division of Smith & Nephew, Inc., a subsidiary of Smith & Nephew plc., notes the decision returned today by a jury in the patent litigation brought by Kinetic Concepts Inc. before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. In that case, the jury found U.S. Patent Nos. 5,645,081 and 7,216,651 to be infringed by Smith & Nephew's RENASYS-F (Foam) Dressing Kit, which delivers Negative Pressure Wound Therapy to patients in need.

BIDMC scientist presented with 2010 Arthur Steindler Award

Christopher Evans, PhD, director of the Center for Advanced Orthopaedic Studies at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Maurice Edmond Mueller Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School, was presented with the 2010 Arthur Steindler Award at this week's annual meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society in New Orleans.

WHO's updated malaria guidelines include rapid diagnosis, new ACT

The WHO on Tuesday released new guidelines for the treatment of malaria, which recommend "parasitological testing before treatment begins" and add "a new artemisinin based combination treatment [ACT] to the list of prescribed drugs," BMJ News reports.

Small study shows eprotirome decreases LDL cholesterol

People whose "bad" cholesterol and risk of future heart disease stay too high despite cholesterol-lowering statin therapy can safely lower it by adding a drug that mimics the action of thyroid hormone. In a report published in the Mar. 11, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, Johns Hopkins and Swedish researchers say an experimental drug called eprotirome lowered cholesterol up to 32 percent in those already on statins, an effect equal to that expected from doubling the statin drug doses, without harmful side effects.
