Evidence-based care for lung cancer patients results in an average cost savings of 35%, says study

A study recently conducted by US Oncology and Aetna finds that evidence-based care for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) results in an average cost savings of 35 percent over 12 months while demonstrating equivalent health outcomes. The study, which compared patients treated with evidence-based guidelines (also known as ‘on pathway’) to those treated with non-evidence-based guidelines (also known as ‘off pathway’), was published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Oncology Practice.

Cytheris commences enrollment in its recombinant human Interleukin-7 INSPIRE 2 program for HIV

Cytheris SA, a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on research and development of new therapies for immune modulation, today announced that it has begun enrolling patients in INSPIRE 2, a Phase IIa clinical program evaluating the company’s investigative immune-modulator, recombinant human Interleukin-7 (CYT107), in the treatment of chronically HIV-1 infected patients classified as Immunological Non Responders (INR) after at least 12 months of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART).

MedGenesis Therapeutix Inc. MRCT announces licensing deal for development of novel therapy for inflammatory and immune diseases

Georg-August-University Gottingen, University of Regensburg and MRC Technology (MRCT) have signed exclusive license agreements through MBM ScienceBridge GmbH and in agreement with Bayerische Patentallianz GmbH, for the development of a novel therapy of inflammatory and immune diseases based on the depletion of inflammatory monocytes. The first targets will be rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and multiple sclerosis (MS).

Prescribing culture of antipsychotic medications in nursing homes examined

Older adults newly admitted to nursing homes with high rates of antipsychotic prescribing in the previous year are more likely to receive antipsychotic agents, according to a report in the January 11 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Of these treated patients, some had no identified clinical indication for this therapy.

New federal law expands mental health coverage

The Los Angeles Times reports on the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which went into effect on Jan. 1. "Passed as part of the federal stimulus package, the act requires that insurers provide mental health coverage that's no less restrictive than traditional medical coverage. In theory, the act should enable patients needing lengthier therapy to receive it.
