Online resource to illustrate genetic networks in common autoimmune diseases published

Currently, 5-8% of the U.S. population is afflicted with an autoimmune disease (www.niaid.nih.gov). Many of these are chronic and require life-long care. Moreover, different autoimmune diseases aggregate within a single family, suggesting they are caused by disruptions in common biological pathways.

Fondation Jacques-F. Gougoux donates over $57,000 to the Quebec Division of the Multiple Sclerosis Society

The Quebec Division of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is delighted to be able to count on the Fondation Jacques-F. Gougoux in improving the quality of life for people with multiple sclerosis and their families. A donation of $57,386, spread over 15 years, will enable the MS Society to make some of its services more accessible.

Montreal Chapter of the MS Society receives funds for physical activity program for people with multiple sclerosis

Under the Foundation of Greater Montreal's Community Grants Program, the Montreal Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada will receive $10,000, which will ensure the continuity of its program of physical activities adapted for people with multiple sclerosis.

Moores UCSD Cancer Center awarded $20 million for cancer research

Researchers led by Moores UCSD Cancer Center Director Dennis A. Veterans with TBI vision loss have poor quality of life compared to civilian patients

Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) Joint Meeting, includes a Veterans Administration study that indicates that Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with vision loss from traumatic brain injury have significantly poorer quality of life than comparable civilian patients, and a Harvard doctor's insights on how to best evaluate and care for low-vision patients who experience vivid visual hallucinations due to Charles Bonnet syndrome.

Discovery of AVM can relieve pain due to chronic back pain and neurologic deficits

The discovery of a multi-level arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the thoracic epidural space can now bring relief to potentially thousands of suffers of chronic thoracic pain and progressive myelopothy. Identified as thoracic epidural arteriovenous malformation (T.E.A.M.), this particular AMV primarily affects younger women ages 20 to 40.

APC enzyme may be effective for treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

A chemical cousin of a drug currently used to treat sepsis dramatically slows the progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, in mice.
