Veracyte announces completion of Series B round

Veracyte, Inc. announced today the successful completion of its Series B round, a key milestone toward the company's first product launch later this year. The South San Francisco biotechnology company is committed to pioneering molecular cytology diagnostics to improve patient care and lower health care costs. This round was led by Domain Associates with significant participation from Veracyte's founding investors including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), TPG Biotech (TPG), and Versant Ventures.

Increased use of intrauterine devices reduces unwanted pregnancies

A study from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, which monitored a group of women for 25 years showed that the combined oral contraceptive pill (the pill) is the most common form of contraceptive among women under 29. At the same time many young women have unwanted pregnancies resulting in repeated abortions. According to the researchers increased use of an intrauterine device at a younger age would reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.

World Bank, partner programs 'not achieving intended outcomes' for TB in Africa, report says

A report, released Wednesday by the group ACTION (Advocacy to Control TB Internationally), finds that the World Bank and its partners' programs to fight tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa are "not achieving intended outcomes" and have been mostly ineffective, Agence France-Presse reports.

Overall death rate for patients developed complications during hospitalization fell by 23%: AHRQ

Fewer hospital patients died from complications in their health care between 2001 and 2006, but Asians/Pacific Islanders and Hispanics were less likely to survive than either whites or blacks, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

ISMP Canada develops new website to help consumers report medication incidents

The Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada, has worked with Patients for Patient Safety Canada, Best Medicines Coalition and other consumer and patient groups to launch an initiative aimed at engaging patients in efforts to prevent harm from medication errors. A new website, www.SafeMedicationUse.ca, developed with support from Health Canada, provides a way for consumers to report medication incidents to ISMP Canada.

An assessment of nearly 70 ambulatory surgical centers in three states found that lapses in infection control were common, including for practices such as hand hygiene, injection and medication safety and equipment reprocessing, according to a study in the June 9 issue of JAMA.

UNITAID concerned about infant HIV medication shortage, drug company says supply is sufficient

Bristol-Myers Squibb's plans this month to close its plant in Meymac, France, that manufactures "the last therapeutic option" for HIV-positive babies has drawn criticism from UNITAID, Reuters reports. In an open letter published in the Lancet, UNITAID writes that "[c]losing this factory means that 4,000 to 7,000 babies currently enrolled in treatment plans in developing countries through UNITAID could be left without the medicines they need."
