The swine flu (H1N1) pandemic has received extensive media coverage this year. The World Health Organization, in addition to providing frequent updates about cases of infection and death tolls, recommends hyper vigilance in daily hygiene such as frequent hand washing or sneezing into the crook of our arms. News reports at all levels, from local school closures to airport screenings and global disease surveillance, continue to remind us of the high risk.

Guideline for newborn screening of preterm, low birth weight, sick and at-risk newborns published

Infants in special care baby units or neonatal intensive care units are at greater risk for missed or incomplete newborn screening than normal newborns. To minimize the risk of missing or delaying a diagnosis, Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) recently published a new document, "Newborn Screening for Preterm, Low Birth Weight, and Sick Newborns; Approved Guideline" (I/LA31-A).

A shorter, five-week course of radiation treatment that delivers higher doses of radiation in fewer sessions, known as hypofractionation, appears to be just as effective and as safe in reducing the risk of prostate cancer from returning as standard radiation therapy, yet is delivered in two-and-a-half weeks less time, according to interim results of a randomized study presented November 4, 2009, at the 51st Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
