Results from this animal model study are published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Lancet study: Most people lack access to life-saving treatments for kidney failure

New estimates published in The Lancet indicate that at best only half of people worldwide needing kidney dialysis or transplantation to treat kidney failure in 2010 received it. This suggests that at least 2.3 million people may have died prematurely from kidney failure because they could not access this life-saving treatment.

Severe mortality-associated diseases less prevalent in members of long-lived families

Recent research from the Long Life Family Study (LLFS) confirms that severe mortality-associated diseases are less prevalent in the families of long-lived individuals than in the general population. The Journals of Gerontology, Series A will publish these findings in the article titled, "Are Members of Long-Lived Families Healthier than Their Equally Long-Lived Peers? Evidence from the Long Life Family Study" on March 5, 2015.

Biomarker for compilation of Risk Score for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis

40 percent of people in the EU suffer from non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (fatty liver disease), a disease which is becoming increasingly more frequent as a result of diabetes and excess weight in an affluent society. Currently, it is not possible to forecast the further course of the disease - right up to cirrhosis and cancer of the liver. Furthermore, an increased risk of heart attack and kidney damage exists. In future, this should become possible using a Risk Score with different biomarkers.

Rigel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2014. For the fourth quarter of 2014, Rigel reported a net loss of $22.3 million, or $0.25 per share, compared to a net loss of $16.9 million, or $0.19 per share, in the fourth quarter of 2013.
