Researchers may be one step closer to slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease

Researchers may be one step closer to slowing the onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease. An animal study supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health, shows that by targeting the blood-brain barrier, researchers are able to slow the accumulation of a protein associated with the progression of the illness.

No nicotine in e-cigarettes for Australians yet

According to a recent study undertaken by the Clinical Trials Research Unit at the University of Auckland published in British Journal Tobacco Control on 8th April 2010, electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes containing nicotine have similar effects to real cigarettes such as the desire to smoke, withdrawal, dependence and other effects.

The government's recent announcement that the EPA is considering the addition of Bisphenol-A (BPA) to their list of "Chemicals of Concern," is a step in the right direction, but long overdue, according to high school junior and BPA researcher, Wendi Oppenheim.

U-M Medical School researchers earn $366M in NIH research funding in fiscal year 2009

University of Michigan Medical School physicians and scientists earned more than $366 million in National Institutes of Health research funding in federal fiscal year 2009, according to NIH data. In all, the School's faculty brought in more than $435 million in research funding from all sources in U-M fiscal year 2009.

Gamma-tocotrienol kills prostate tumour cells in animal model studies

Researchers from Davos Life Science in Singapore, in collaboration with scientists at the University of Hong Kong, have shown that gamma-tocotrienol, a member of the vitamin E family, is potent in killing prostate tumour cells in animal model studies. This research was reported this week in the latest edition of Pharmacology.

Near death experiences have often been described as “seeing life flash before one’s eyes” or “intense feelings of joy and peace.” Now researchers claim that levels of Carbon Dioxide or CO2 may be the causal link for these sensations. They believe that the CO2 alters the levels of certain chemicals in the brain and makes it see lights at the ends of tunnels or dead loved ones.

WTC FDNY Rescue Workers have not recovered normal lung function, yet

A study of nearly 13,000 rescue workers from the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) shows that the significant proportion who suffered acute lung damage after exposure to World Trade Center (WTC) dust have not recovered normal lung function in the years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

9/11 rescue teams’ lungs still affected and aged by 12 years: say researchers

In a published report in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine this Wednesday researchers revealed that fire fighters and rescue workers who assisted in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001 had compromised lung function even seven years after the incident.

Occupational exposure to synthetic fibers – a possible link with breast cancer

According to a recent report published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, scientists have found that women during her mid 30's exposed to petrol products and synthetic fibers could treble the risk of developing breast cancer after menopause. According to the report, "Occupational exposure to nylon and acrylic fibers as well as to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has higher risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer."

New report assesses optimal future for REMS

Two years after the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 gave FDA new powers to require Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies for higher risk drugs and biologics, a new report concludes that an optimal future for REMS is possible if the agency adopts a systems approach when designing REMS programs and takes advantage of new technologies -- from electronic medical records to genetic testing -- that are changing the way medicine is practiced.
