Calcitriol is a form of Vitamin D3 with three alcohol groups. It increases gastrointestinal calcium absorption, stimulates osteoclastic calcium resorption from bone, facilitates the effect parathyroid hormone (PTH) has on bone resorption, and increases renal tubular absorption of calcium. Production of calcitriol by the cells of the proximal tubule of the nephron in the kidney is stimulated by hypocalcemia and hypophosphatemia as well as parathyroid hormone.

A group of experts has prepared a report on vitamin D supplementation for menopausal women after it was revealed that Europeans have suffered an alarming decrease in their levels of this vitamin. In their opinion, the ideal would be to maintain blood levels above 30 ng/ml. Vitamin D is essential to the immune system and processes such as calcium absorption.

Chart trends for bone and mineral metabolism in CKD

BioTrends Research Group, LLC has released findings from the 2011 ChartTrends: Bone and Mineral Metabolism in Chronic Kidney Disease report, the fifth in an on-going annual series. The study was conducted with 204 U.S. nephrologists who completed detailed chart reviews for 1,037 patients in CKD Stage 3, 4 and 5 not yet on dialysis.

Validus chooses Ranbaxy to market an authorized generic version of Rocaltrol in the US

Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc. (RPI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited (RLL), Gurgaon, India, announced an agreement with Validus Pharmaceuticals LLC (Validus) to market and distribute an authorized generic version of Rocaltrol(R) (calcitriol) in both softgel capsules and an oral liquid formulation. Overall market sales for calcitriol softgel capsules and oral liquid were $70 million (IMS - MAT: June 2009).
