A biomarker is a biological molecule found in blood, other body fluids, or tissues that is a sign of a normal or abnormal process, or of a condition or disease. A biomarker may be used to see how well the body responds to a treatment for a disease or condition. Also called molecular marker and signature molecule.

bioTheranostics reports new findings from study evaluating Breast Cancer Index molecular oncology test

bioTheranostics, a bioMerieux company that develops innovative oncology diagnostic tests to support targeted disease management, announced today new findings from a clinical study evaluating the company's Breast Cancer Index (BCI) molecular oncology test. Data from the study were presented at the 33rd Annual CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS).

Better approaches to ovarian cancer screening could lower cancer deaths

Cancer prevention experts have long been frustrated by the lack of a meaningful way to screen women for ovarian cancer. It is a relatively rare disease that often progresses with few symptoms until it is too late for potentially curative treatments, and elevated values of the most commonly used biomarker used in screening, CA125, are also related to other disorders.

Prometheus, UCLA collaborate to identify biological markers of mucosal healing in IBD

Prometheus Laboratories Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical and diagnostic company, and The Regents of the University of California, Los Angeles campus, today announced the execution of an exclusive research agreement that will focus on the identification of biological markers of mucosal healing in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The research will be led by Dr. Jonathan Braun, Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and a professor of molecular and medical pharmacology, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

Entinostat plus erlotinib improves survival in NSCLC patients with elevated E-cadherin

Syndax Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a clinical-stage epigenetics oncology company, announces clinical results from ENCORE 401, a double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 trial, in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The results show that there was a survival advantage in the subset of patients with elevated E-cadherin (a molecular marker of epithelial tumors) receiving entinostat in combination with erlotinib (Tarceva®).

Caliper to acquire CRi for $20.0 million

Caliper Life Sciences, Inc., a leading provider of products and services for drug discovery research, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately-held Cambridge Research & Instrumentation, Inc. (CRi) for approximately $20.0 million, including net debt. CRi's patented preclinical and tissue-based multiplexed analysis systems will expand Caliper's life sciences tools portfolio, particularly as it bridges into clinical research, pathology and clinical market applications.

Mayo Clinic researchers found that the part of the brain generating seizures in individuals with epilepsy is functionally isolated from surrounding brain regions. The researchers hope this finding could be a clinical biomarker to help identify individuals with abnormal brain function.

With the use of a highly sensitive test, detection of the blood biomarker cardiac troponin T, a cardiac-specific protein, is associated with structural heart disease and an increased risk of all-cause death, according to a study in the December 8 issue of JAMA.

Protein alpha-2-beta-1 integrin suppresses metastasis

Mary Zutter and colleagues, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, have generated data that lead them to suggest that decreased expression of the protein alpha-2 integrin is predictive of tumor dissemination to distant sites and decreased survival in individuals with either breast or prostate cancer.

Cylene Pharmaceuticals to present data on CK2 inhibitor at ASH Annual Meeting

Cylene Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has been selected to present data describing the activity of their first-in-class CK2 inhibitor at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology, to be held on December 4-7 in Orlando, FL, the company announced today. Kenna Anderes, VP Cancer Biology at Cylene, will discuss research on targeting CK2, a protein kinase that is essential for the progression of multiple myeloma but that has not been previously exploited as an anticancer target.

MRI scans quantifies disruptions in blood brain barrier, identifies TBI patients at risk of developing PTE

Approximately 5 - 30% of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) develop post traumatic epilepsy (PTE). The onset of seizures in patients who are susceptible to PTE can range from weeks or months to more than a decade after TBI. In a presentation today at the 64th American Epilepsy Society annual meeting, scientists report that the analysis of routine MRI scans can reliably quantify the disruptions in the blood brain barrier that are increasingly believed to be a prominent contributor to epilepsy development.

On November 19, Jason Martin returned to the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for the first time since he nearly died there during last year's H1N1 flu pandemic.
