Covidien International Finance prices $1.5 billion Senior Notes offering

Covidien plc today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Covidien International Finance S.A. , priced an offering of $500 million aggregate principal amount of 1.875% senior notes due 2013, $400 million aggregate principal amount of 2.80% senior notes due 2015 and $600 million aggregate principal amount of 4.20% senior notes due 2020. The offering is expected to close on June 28, 2010.

Hepatic artery thrombosis, which is the most common vascular complication after living donor liver transplantation, can result in graft loss and devastating consequences. Surgical techniques are suggested to an important factor in causing HAT. Despite improvements in surgical techniques, arterial reconstruction in LDLT has a high risk of thrombosis.

Childrens Hospital Los Angeles awarded $2.5M NIH grant to study risk of osteoporosis in spina bifida children

Tishya Wren, PhD, of The Saban Research Institute at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, has received a $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health - National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to study bone development in children with myelomeningocele, the most severe type of spina bifida .

N.Y. tries to get more patients in clinical drug trials; Atlanta hospitals create partnerships

In New York, state medical centers and drug makers have begun an effort to address a problem associated with clinical drug trials: "getting patients to sign up. More than 3,000 clinical trials are actively recruiting in New York state, and an additional 8,000 trials involving New York are already running or were recently completed, according to the government clinical trials registry. Patient recruitment is one of the top reasons that clinical trials are delayed or fail, according to the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development.

Milwaukee teens are part of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy's new, nationwide campaign encouraging teens to engage in a conversation about the positive and negative pressures that influence their decisions. The Influence Project is part of a new initiative of the anti-drug teen brand, Above the Influence, which emphasizes what teens do to resist drug use and stay "above" negative influences.

Robert Zucker, Ph.D., director of the University of Michigan Addiction Research Center, and the Substance Abuse Section in the Department of Psychiatry, has been named recipient of the 31st annual Research Society on Alcoholism Distinguished Researcher Award.
