Researchers receive two grants to create diagnostic tool for early detection of childhood mental disorders

A University of Minnesota research team was recently awarded two grants totaling more than $3 million from the National Science Foundation's Cyber-Enabled Discovery and MRI Programs to create robotic devices and computer vision algorithms that will assist with the early diagnosis of children at risk of developing disorders such as autism, attention deficit disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.

FDA clears Toshiba's Auto-IMT ultrasound software tool

For physicians, the ability to streamline exams for determining a patient's risk for cardiovascular disease is important in determining the patient's clinical pathway. To enhance diagnostic efficiency, Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. has introduced Auto-IMT, an ultrasound software tool that can measure the thickness of the intima-media layers of the carotid artery, for evaluating an asymptomatic patient's risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

UC Davis and Sutter first to share electronic health records in the region

Steven Hedrick, deputy director of rehabilitative programs at the California Department of Corrections, was relaxing at home recently when a sharp pain rippled through his lower abdomen. The ache was so severe that he drove to the nearest treatment center Sutter Urgent Care, Yuba City. Physicians there quickly evaluated Steven, obtained a CT scan and diagnosed him with kidney stones. Hedrick was prescribed pain medication and counseled to check in with his primary care physician at UC Davis as soon as possible.

The rule classifies these products, known as Medical Device Data Systems or MDDS, as Class I or low-risk devices, making them exempt from premarket review but still subject to quality standards.

A new strategic plan from an arm of the National Institutes of Health envisions scientists being able to identify genetic bases of most single-gene disorders and gaining new insights into multi-gene disorders in the next decade. This should lead to more accurate diagnoses, new drug targets and the development of practical treatments for many who today lack therapeutic options, according to the plan from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).

NIH awards Geospiza phase II SBIR grant to develop new DNA variant application for GeneSifter platform
