Doxorubicin hydrochloride is approved for use with other drugs as adjuvant therapy for breast cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes, including cancer that is HER-2 positive or has spread after surgery.

In addition to the uses that have been approved by the FDA, doxorubicin hydrochloride is sometimes used alone or with other drugs to treat other types of cancer. The drug continues to be studied in the treatment of many types of cancer.

Millennium's sNDA for VELCADE granted priority review by the FDA

Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted priority review to the Company’s supplemental new drug application (sNDA) for VELCADE. The sNDA contains long-term overall survival (OS) data from the landmark VISTA trial examining the use of VELCADE based therapy in patients with previously untreated multiple myeloma (MM).

Genentech releases Phase III PRIMA study findings

Genentech, Inc., a wholly-owned member of the Roche Group and Biogen Idec, today announced that a Phase III study (PRIMA) showed that patients with follicular lymphoma who continued receiving Rituxan (rituximab) alone after responding to Rituxan and chemotherapy lived longer without their disease worsening (progression-free survival or PFS) than those who did not continue to receive Rituxan.

Diabetes drug and chemotherapy kill cancer stem cells in mice

In a one-two punch, a familiar diabetes drug reduced tumors faster and prolonged remission in mice longer than chemotherapy alone by targeting cancer stem cells, Harvard Medical School researchers reported in the September 14 online first edition of Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Doxorubicin granted orphan drug designation by the FDA

Delcath Systems, Inc., a medical technology company testing its proprietary treatment method for primary and metastatic cancers to the liver, announced that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration granted Delcath's request for orphan drug designation for doxorubicin for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), also known as primary liver cancer. Gene variation associated with resistance to chemotherapy drug in women with breast cancer

Researchers have found links between an individual's genetics and their response to treatment with chemotherapy. The findings, by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and colleagues, show how a genetic variant, located in the SOD2 gene, may affect how a person responds to the chemotherapy drug cyclophosphamide. Cyclophosphamide is used in the treatment of breast and other cancers.

Chemo improves survival among older breast cancer patients

The average age of a woman diagnosed with breast cancer is 63, so it is critical to have effective proven, therapies for an older patient population.
