Male pattern baldness causes discovered

Most men start to go bald in middle age, with about 80% of men having some hair loss by the age of 70. Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss for men, the National Institute of Health said. Symptoms include a thinning of hair at the hairline, eventually creating a U-shaped or horseshoe pattern of hair on both sides of the head. The male sex hormone testosterone plays a key role, as do genetic factors. They cause the hair follicles to shrink, eventually becoming so small that they are invisible, leading to the appearance of baldness. While treatment is not necessary, side effects including psychological stress and loss of self-esteem due to change in appearance can be experienced.

Clear link between androgenetic alopecia and benign prostate hyperplasia

Spanish scientists have confirmed that there is a clear relationship between androgenetic alopecia (common premature baldness) and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), a benign enlargement of the prostate that appears in aging men and is associated with certain hormones as dihydrotestosterone. This condition appears in 50% of men over 60 year old and causes voiding syndrome i.e. urinary frequency.

Mitochondrial dysfunction in tissue stem cells can cause aging-associated degeneration

Aging-related tissue degeneration can be caused by mitochondrial dysfunction in tissue stem cells. The research group of Professor Anu Suomalainen Wartiovaara at the University of Helsinki, with their collaborators in Max Planck Institute for Biology of Aging, Karolinska Institutet and University of Wisconsin, reported on the 3rd January in Cell Metabolism their results on mechanisms of aging-associated degeneration.

Scientists decipher how hair stem cells can communicate with each other

A Hunter-based prostate cancer support group says ground-breaking research by the University of Newcastle will help save many lives in the region. This new work has found patients with localized advanced prostate cancer can double their chances of survival by undertaking hormone therapy in combination with radiology treatment. This comes from a 10 year trial, coordinated by the University's Professor Jim Debnam.
