A research team from McGill University (Canada) report a beneficial effect on cardiac function in mouse models when implanted monocytes - a type of white blood cell that is part of the immune system - helped preserve cardiac function following a heart attack (myocardial infarction).

New legislation will impede use of MRI in medical research

Europe must act to prevent new legislation impeding the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in medical research, diagnosis and treatment, states the European Science Foundation (ESF) in a new report. The report is endorsed by the European Medical Research Councils, representing the medical research communities in 30 countries.

Experimental vaccine for Marburg hemorrhagic fever prevention shows promise for accidental exposures

An experimental vaccine developed to prevent outbreaks of Marburg hemorrhagic fever continues to show promise in monkeys as an emergency treatment for accidental exposures to the virus that causes the disease. There is no licensed treatment for Marburg infection, which has a high fatality rate.

Scientists have devised a way to automate and accelerate a manual, complex process that enables researchers to more easily discover the structure of cancer-related proteins, and, eventually, formulate cancer cures. This new, automated approach may also help the exploration of other diseases and food-related research.

Sulindac shuts down cancer cell growth, initiates cell death: Study

Without knowing exactly why, scientists have long observed that people who regularly take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin have lower incidences of certain types of cancer. Now, in a study appearing in Cancer Cell on June 15, investigators at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and their colleagues have figured out how one NSAID, called Sulindac, inhibits tumor growth.

'Micro-ear' to screen for malaria, sleeping sickness

A team of researchers from the Universities of Glasgow and Oxford, and the UK's National Institute of Medical Research at Mill Hill, are developing a 'micro-ear' which may help develop medicines and screening for diseases such as malaria and sleeping sickness in Africa. The project is in two parts, explains Professor Jon Cooper, a bio-engineer at University of Glasgow.

New guideline to improve IHC testing for expression status of ER and PgR in breast cancer issued

The College of American Pathologists and the American Society of Clinical Oncology today issued a joint guideline aimed at improving the accuracy of immunohistochemistry testing for the expression status of estrogen and progesterone receptors in breast cancer. The two groups conducted a systematic review of medical research literature in partnership with Cancer Care Ontario to develop the recommendations.

Thomson Reuters today announced that it has donated two ScholarOne Manuscripts sites to the newest members of the African Journal Partnership Project -- the Medical Journal of Zambia, John S. Kachimba, Editor; and the Ethiopian Journal of Health Services, Abraham Haileamlak, Editor. Since 2005, Thomson Reuters has worked with the Council of Science Editors to assist editors of sub-Saharan medical journals increase the visibility and quality of their journals.

Gambling addiction can be inherited equally by sons and daughters: Study

Gambling is linked to a gene that is passed on through generations and a new study claims that it is passed on to both sons and daughters alike. The study published in the June issue of Archives of General Psychiatry says, that genes rule at least 50 percent of a persons propensity to gamble irrespective of sex. Genes have been linked earlier to gambling but this is the first time women are also said to inherit the trait.

$15 million sanctioned for replacement of school gas heaters not enough say organizations

The State Government of NSW has decided upon a $15 million replacement of nearly 100 school gas heaters especially targeting cold climate areas of NSW. The New South Wales Teachers Federation said in a statement that they will be urging the government to expand the programme to other areas replacing the unflued gas heaters in schools.
