TSRI scientists discover unusual protein that probably helps some bacteria evade immune response

A team led by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) has discovered an unusual bacterial protein that attaches to virtually any antibody and prevents it from binding to its target. Protein M, as it is called, probably helps some bacteria evade the immune response and establish long-term infections.

FDA grants Breakthrough Therapy designation to GSK's Promacta/Revolade for treatment of cytopenias

Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted its partner GlaxoSmithKline plc Breakthrough Therapy designation for Promacta/Revolade (eltrombopag) for the treatment of cytopenias in patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) who have had insufficient response to immunosuppressive therapy.

The cancer incidence rates are from 2008 as assembled by the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization.

New report shows death rates for lung cancer dropping at a faster pace

The Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, covering the period 1975, showed death rates for lung cancer, which accounts for more than one in four cancer deaths, dropping at a faster pace than in previous years. The recent larger drop in lung cancer deaths is likely the result of decreased cigarette smoking prevalence over many years, and is now being reflected in mortality trends. The lung cancer death rate decline, as well as declines in colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer death rates, has also helped drive decreases in death rates for all cancers types combined, a trend that began about 20 years ago.

Celgene today announced that data from the FIRST (Frontline Investigation of lenalidomide and dexamethasone vs. standard thalidomide) trial was presented on Sunday 8 December, during the Plenary Scientific Session at the 55th American Society Hematology annual meeting in New Orleans. FIRST (MM-020/IFM 07-01) a phase III, multi-centre study in patients newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma and ineligible for stem cell transplant, included 72 patients from the UK.
