Scientists explore geochemical conditions that may have led to first relevant organophosphates

The phosphate ion is almost insoluble and is one of the most inactive of Earth's most abundant phosphate minerals. So how could phosphate have originally been incorporated into ribonucleotides, the building blocks of RNA, which are considered to be among the earliest constituents of life? American and Spanish scientists have now identified reasonable conditions to mobilize phosphate from insoluble apatite minerals for prebiotic organophosphate synthesis, including ribonucleotides.

Now, researchers have demonstrated that two iron-containing small-molecule catalysts can help turn certain types of amino acids -- the building blocks of peptides and proteins -- into an array of potential new forms, even when part of a larger peptide, while preserving a crucial aspect of their chemistry: chirality, or "handedness."

Quantum Genomics initiates Phase IIa trial for heart failure

Quantum Genomics, a biopharmaceutical company with the mission of developing new therapies for unmet medical needs in the field of cardiovascular diseases, today announced the initiation of its Phase IIa multicentric clinical trial of GQC101, entitled QUID HF (QUantum Genomics Incremental Dosing in Heart Failure), for the treatment of patients with chronic heart failure. The first three clinical centres of the European trial have been opened in France and Norway.

New AAV 3.0 program to create next-generation viral vectors for better treatment of inherited diseases

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has launched a new program, called AAV 3.0, to create new viral vectors to find quicker and better treatments for an array of diseases. James M. Wilson, MD, PhD, a professor of Medicine and director of the Orphan Disease Center, will lead an interdisciplinary team of over 30 scientists to create this new technology platform with support provided by the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
