Ocean Medical Imaging Center acquires X-Ray Associates in NJ

Ocean Medical Imaging Center (OMIC), developed through a partnership with Lake Forest, Calif.-based InSight Health Services Holdings Corp., today announced that it acquired X-Ray Associates, P.A. in Toms River, NJ from the Sonix Medical Resources, Inc. bankruptcy proceeding in New York. OMIC purchased the new center for approximately $1.475 million.

New report showing nation's progress toward eliminating HAIs released

Today, we are releasing a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which shows our nation is making progress toward eliminating healthcare-associated infections that kill almost 100,000 Americans each year. The report today focuses on central line-associated bloodstream infections, serious infections that can cause death in hospitalized patients and an estimated $2.7 billion in added cost to the U.S. healthcare system.

BTE awards Diabetes Care Recognition Program certificates to 118 Montefiore Medical Group physicians

Bridges to Excellence, a national program that recognizes and rewards physicians for delivering better quality care, today awarded its sought-after Diabetes Care Recognition Program certificate to the 118 physicians in Montefiore Medical Center's 20 outpatient care facilities, known as the Montefiore Medical Group, for substantially lowering blood sugar levels and "bad" cholesterol levels in thousands of adult patients with diabetes.

"[M]ore than 200 area hospital administrators, doctors, nurses, and others met with national experts at the Union League in Center City to learn about strategies to reduce hospital readmissions in the five-county Philadelphia area. One approach is to use nurses to proactively treat the highest-risk patients — older people with multiple chronic illnesses — who cost the most money."

A $5 billion fund to create high-risk pools in the states as part of the health overhaul may fall short of meeting the needs of uninsured people with health problems if state and federal officials closely monitor the program, according to a new report by the National Institute for Health Care Reform, an automaker-sponsored think tank, Kaiser Health News reports.

Feds will pay the bulk of Medicaid expansion costs under overhaul, study finds

"As states complain about the burden of expanding health care to millions of poor Americans under the new federal health-care law, a study released Wednesday suggests their claims may be overstated. The issue is the cost of expanding Medicaid ... and the report from the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured says states are likely to reap huge benefits for relatively little cost, and may even end up in the black."

The expansion of Medicaid under the new health reform law will significantly increase the number of people covered by the program and markedly reduce the uninsured in states across the country, with the federal government picking up the overwhelming majority of the cost, according to a state-by-state analysis released today by the Kaiser Family Foundation's Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured.

State round up: Texas approves higher co-pays for retirees, California's next elected insurance commissioner to play critical health care role

The Illinois "House voted 71-44 to borrow up to $4 billion to cover next year's payments to the five state-funded pension systems." Lawmakers also rejected a proposal to have "retired state employees paying premiums for their health-care coverage. Rep. Karen May, D-Highland Park, said the state could save $100 million a year by having retirees pay premiums, noting that 92 percent of them pay nothing now."
