New study gives hope for novel glioblastoma multiforme treatment

A new study is giving researchers hope that novel targeted therapies can be developed for glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and most aggressive form of brain cancer, after demonstrating for the first time that a gene known as melanoma differentiation associated gene-9/syntenin (mda-9/syntenin) is a driving force behind the disease's aggressive and invasive nature.

Antipsychotic medication can actively combat cells of difficult-to-treat form of ALL

In a prime example of finding new uses for older drugs, studies in zebrafish show that a 50-year-old antipsychotic medication called perphenazine can actively combat the cells of a difficult-to-treat form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The drug works by turning on a cancer-suppressing enzyme called PP2A and causing malignant tumor cells to self-destruct.

Zymeworks, ImClone Systems partner to develop novel bi-specific antibody oncology therapeutics

Zymeworks Inc. today announced that it has entered into a licensing and collaboration agreement with ImClone Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eli Lilly and Company, to develop an undisclosed number of novel bi-specific antibody oncology therapeutics using Zymeworks' proprietary Azymetric platform. Bi-specific antibodies have the potential to provide improved outcomes for patients by simultaneously targeting two tumor associated antigens to induce a synergistic therapeutic response.

GSK receives FDA approval for combination of Mekinist with Tafinlar for treatment of melanoma

GlaxoSmithKline plc announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Mekinist® (trametinib) for use in combination with Tafinlar® (dabrafenib) for the treatment of patients with unresectable melanoma (melanoma that cannot be removed by surgery) or metastatic melanoma (melanoma which has spread to other parts of the body) with BRAF V600E or V600K mutations.

FDA approves Actavis' ANDA for Telmisartan Immediate-Release Tablets

Actavis plc today announced that it has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on its Abbreviated New Drug Application for Telmisartan Immediate-Release Tablets, 20 mg, 40 mg and 80 mg, a generic equivalent to Boehringer Ingelheim's Micardis. Actavis intends to launch the product immediately.

The Wilson Medical Center Board of Directors has taken the next step in becoming part of Duke LifePoint Healthcare. The organizations have signed a definitive agreement to form a joint venture. The proposed joint venture, which will provide Wilson Medical Center with resources to enhance its services and invest in its growth, is moving forward following a positive vote by the Wilson County Board of Commissioners. The agreement is under review by the Attorney General of North Carolina.

Janssen-Cilag International NV today announced the early stopping of PCYC-1112-CA, the Phase 3 study of ibrutinib in the treatment of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma, based on the recommendation of an Independent Data Monitoring Committee, which concluded that the study showed a significant difference in progression-free survival as compared to the control, the primary endpoint of the study.
