Researchers from across multiple disciplines at NYU Langone Medical Center created a new protein molecule derived from the growth factor progranulin may provide the basis for new therapies in inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, according to a study published in the March 10, 2011 issue of Science.

Lab made urinary tube going strong after six years of transplant

In a scientific breakthrough, five boys who were unable to urinate due to pelvic injury were cured for up to six years after getting new lab-grown urethras or urinary tubes that connect with the bladder. This breakthrough comes from Wake Forest University researcher Anthony Atala. It was in 2006 that the team reported the first successful implantation of lab-grown urinary bladders into humans. Today six years after the operation all of the boys continue to do well, with normal or near-normal urinary flow. The boy first treated is now 16 years old and received his lab-grown urethra over six years ago.

Researchers use qMRI to confirm effect of CS treatment in patients with OA

A group of Canadian researchers led by Prof. Jean-Pierre Pelletier, Head of the Osteoarthritis Research Unit at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre, published a clinical trial in which they confirm, for the first time using quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging, the disease modifying effects of chondroitin sulphate, a symptomatic slow acting drug for osteoarthritis.

New research: Incidence of PE after knee arthroscopy is 0.028%

Until now, the risk of pulmonary embolism after a knee arthroscopy has not been accurately defined and risk factors have only been suggested but not proven. New research, presented today at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons shows that the incidence of symptomatic PE after outpatient knee arthroscopy is .028 percent.

Blood vessels for heart bypass could be available ‘off-the-shelf’ soon: Study

Scientists from USA have developed a method to produce a ready made supply of blood vessels for use in heart bypass surgery. A study on baboons and dogs reported in journal Science Translational Medicine suggests vessels could be stored for up to a year and used by any patient. These vessels have been grown earlier from a patient’s own cells, but this takes several months.

Early, correct diagnosis is the best way to prevent the development of Lyme arthritis in individuals with the tick-borne illness, according to a paper published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
