Cytochroma reports positive Phase 1/2 results for CTAP101 Capsules in non-dialysis CKD patients

Cytochroma today announced positive Phase 1/2 results for CTAP101 Capsules, a product being developed to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) associated with vitamin D insufficiency in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. The study demonstrated that a single dose of CTAP101 Capsules was safe, effective and well tolerated.

DMC recommends ARIAD continue Phase 3 trial of oral ridaforolimus for metastatic sarcomas to final analysis

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that the independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) of the Phase 3 SUCCEED trial has completed the second interim efficacy analysis as specified in the study protocol and has recommended that the randomized, placebo-controlled trial of oral ridaforolimus in patients with metastatic sarcomas continue to its final analysis, without modification to the study protocol.

Researchers study how hematopoietic cells react when Epo levels increase

Our body reacts to blood loss by stimulating the production of red blood cells (erythrocytes). The cells of the hematopoietic (blood-forming) system in the bone marrow do so upon receipt of a signal by a hormone called erythropoietin, or Epo for short. This hormone is produced mainly by the kidney that increases the Epo level by up to a thousand-fold as a response to falling oxygen saturation of the blood.

Researchers determine critical role of bone marrow cells in fighting respiratory viruses

Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine for the first time have determined that bone marrow cells play a critical role in fighting respiratory viruses, making the bone marrow a potential therapeutic target, especially in people with compromised immune systems. They have found that during infections of the respiratory tract, cells produced by the bone marrow are instructed by proteins to migrate to the lungs to help fight infection. The data are published in the current issue of Cell Host & Microbe.

A technique pioneered in the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Laboratory of Dr. Jeremy Mao, the Edward V. Zegarelli Professor of Dental Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, can orchestrate stem cells to migrate to a three-dimensional scaffold infused with growth factor, holding the translational potential to yield an anatomically correct tooth in as soon as nine weeks once implanted.

SLU Hospital announces increase in number of minimally-invasive spinal procedures performed

With the recent launch of the Neurosurgical Spine Program at Saint Louis University Hospital's Center for Cerebrovascular and Skull Base Surgery, the hospital has seen a dramatic increase in the number of minimally-invasive spinal procedures, including lumbar spinal fusion surgery. Designed to stop the motion at a painful vertebral segment, this procedure is traditionally performed via a large incision on the back, stripping vital muscles away from the spine.
