Women reaching the age of 40 tend to be less vigilant about birth control because they think the risk of pregnancy is low - or that birth control can cause health problems - but a review of the evidence by a team that includes a Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island physician recently underscored the need to be vigilant about contraception even in perimenopause.

High soy consumption improves overall survival in women with lung cancer

New results from a large observational follow-up study conducted in Shanghai, China, indicate that women with lung cancer who consumed more soy food prior to their cancer diagnosis lived longer than those who consumed less soy.

Actavis settles patent litigation with AstraZeneca over generic version of Crestor

Actavis, Inc., a leading specialty pharmaceutical company, today announced that is has reached a settlement agreement with AstraZeneca resolving outstanding patent litigation related to Actavis' generic version of rosuvastatin calcium 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg tablets, the generic version of Crestor tablets, as well as Actavis' rosuvastatin zinc alternate salt product.

Survivors of childhood leukemia and lymphoma are at greater risk of chronic fatigue: Study

Chronic fatigue, a persistent lack of energy that does not improve with rest, is at least three times more prevalent among adult survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and lymphoma experienced during childhood or adolescence than in the general adult population, according to an article in Journal of Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology, a multidisciplinary peer-reviewed publication from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.

Study links inherited variations in few genes to increased risk of pediatric leukemia

Humans have between 20,000 and 25,000 genes that carry instructions for assembling the proteins that do the work of cells. Work led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital found that children who inherit certain variations in four particular genes are at much higher risk of developing acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
