New study to boost immune cells for pathogen resistance and vaccine efficacy in elderly

A new study from the Trudeau Institute in Saranac Lake, New York, demonstrates that immune system cells important for both pathogen resistance and vaccine efficacy live longer in older animals but because of this longevity acquire functional defects. The work may provide new targets for boosting immune system function in older individuals.

Vaccine to treat cocaine dependence reduces use of the drug, according to study

A vaccine to treat cocaine dependence appears to reduce use of the drug in a subgroup of individuals who attain high anticocaine antibody levels in response, according to a report in the October issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. However, only 38 percent of vaccinated individuals produced high enough antibody levels and those who did maintained them for only two months.

Positive results from Peregrine's Phase II bavituximab trial for non-small cell lung cancer

Peregrine Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported additional positive results in its Phase II trial evaluating bavituximab in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Data previously reported from the initial cohort of 21 patients in the study had indicated that 11 of 17 evaluable patients with locally advanced or metastatic NSCLC achieved an objective tumor response according to RECIST criteria.

Integral Molecular, Inc. has been selected by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to map epitopes for monoclonal antibodies directed against cancer biomarkers. Protein targets of interest to the Clinical Cancer Proteomics community will be analyzed using Shotgun Mutagenesis Mapping technology to identify amino acids that are essential for antibody binding, allowing the discovery and characterization of cancer-specific biomarkers.
