Update from Karo Bio for the period January-September

In an update of the project portfolio, Karo Bio announced, among other things, that the company, in accordance with earlier communicated plans, has submitted an IND application for eprotirome to the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA); that a candidate drug has been nominated within the ER-beta program; and that the company has decided not to initiate further in-house development of KB3305 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

The Century Council provides $100,000 research grant to EMF

AAP's initiative to address childhood asthma

With chronic diseases on the rise in children, pediatricians are looking for solutions to improve care and outcomes for these often complex illnesses. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) today announced a new initiative funded with a grant from the Merck Childhood Asthma Network, Inc. (MCAN) that will allow pediatricians across the country to pilot a series of quality improvement programs to effectively address the top chronic disease affecting kids - childhood asthma.

Senate Finance Committee passes health bill, but with plenty of grumbling

The Senate Finance Committee yesterday became the fifth and final committee in Congress to pass a health care overhaul bill. The committee voted 14-9 in favor of the bill with Sen. Olympia Snowe, of Maine, joining all of the panel's Democrats to cast the sole Republican "yea" vote.

CalRHIO's statewide HIE system implemented in Orange County

The first site in CalRHIO's statewide health information exchange (HIE) system is live in Orange County at Coastal Communities Hospital. As a result of collaboration between CalRHIO and the local HIE effort, the Orange County Partnership Regional Health Information Organization (OCPRHIO), 23 hospital emergency departments over the next five months will have secure electronic access to critical medical information.

Precautionary measures being taken at Texas hospitals for combating flu

Precautionary measures are being taken at hospital ERs across Texas in order to deal with record numbers of flu cases this season. According to a recent article on NBCDFW.com, hospital emergency rooms, including the one at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, are screening visitors for flu symptoms and not allowing children under 12 to be in the patient areas unless they are being treated.

GeneMedRx software warns patients and physicians if tamoxifen benefit is at risk

One hundred eighty thousand women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Eighty thousand will start taking the drug tamoxifen to prevent the recurrence of their ER (estrogen receptor) positive breast cancers. The treatment is successful in two-thirds of the women who take it. Genelex Corporation (Seattle) is now offering Tamoxitest(TM) that could improve this success rate to greater than 90% by addressing both of the common causes of tamoxifen treatment failure.
