DOD-funded METRC consortium receives $38.6 million grant to improve care for wounded service members

One of two dozen major trauma centers named to be a part of the Department of Defense-funded Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium (METRC), Saint Louis University will work to improve treatment for wounded service members and civilians. The partnership aims to conduct research to improve the care of major orthopaedic injuries sustained on the battlefield.

Researchers study Rett neurons in a Petri dish

A collaborative effort between researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the University of California, San Diego, successfully used human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells derived from patients with Rett syndrome to replicate autism in the lab and study the molecular pathogenesis of the disease.

The Atlantic spoke with Andrew Webber, president and CEO of the National Business Coalition on Health, "a national, not-for-profit organization that represents public and private sector employers," who said: "There are a lot of different requirement issues [in the health reform law]. … To be brutally honest, do [employers] like a lot of new regulation? Docs continue to worry about Medicare payment cuts while CMS updates ratings for Medicare Advantage plans

WBUR in Boston reports on Medicare payments to doctors and the sustainable growth rate, and "the latest installment of the 1997 Balanced Budget Act and attempts to rein in spending on health care for the elderly." Congress set up the rate formula for doctors pay. But medical costs increased at a greater rate than expected and "Congress started telling doctors they had to take a cut to make the formula work.

Hartford Hospital research team receives $238,000 grant from InHealth to study prostate cancer

The Institute for Health Technology Studies (InHealth) has awarded a grant totaling more than $238,000 to a research team at the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut to study how various prostate cancer treatments affect a patient's "social capital" the ability to continue working productively in a paying job.

FDA unveils graphic anti-smoking warnings for cigarette packages

Chili pepper-shaped wrist bands raise $5.6 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

The must-have tween accessory of 2010 the collectible rubber bracelet helped Chili's Grill & Bar raise $5.6 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital this year. $1 from each $3, five-pack of chili pepper-shaped wrist bands sold benefited Chili's annual fundraiser to St. Jude, the nation's top ranked children's cancer hospital. The wrist bands proved so popular that they sold out in restaurants nationwide in less than 30 days.
