Stretching before exercise does not prevent injuries: Study

A new study presented on 18th February at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Annual Meeting reported that that warm-up stretching had no effect on whether runners sustained an injury or not. It did not prevent injuries or result in more injuries.

Tip sheets provide details on hip and knee fracture treatment

Patients who wait more than 36 hours for surgery to correct a hip fracture have a 39 percent rate of medical complication and those who wait 48 hours have a 46 percent complication rate. Patients who receive surgical treatment within 24 hours have a lower complication rate of 25 percent and a shorter hospital stay. Each day the surgery was delayed added an additional two days to hospital stay.

New study to understand dimensions of injuries sustained by soldiers serving overseas

A team of U.S. Army orthopedic surgeons is conducting research to better understand the dimensions of injuries sustained by soldiers serving overseas. The most recent paper in their research series, presented this week at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) 2011 Annual Meeting, followed a single Brigade Combat Team of 4,122 soldiers over 15 months in Iraq.

Patients who undergo elective orthopedic surgeries at high-volume, regional hospitals have better surgical outcomes and experience fewer complications than those who undergo those surgeries at local hospitals, according to research being presented by Hospital for Special Surgery investigators at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

New study identifies factors that predict dancer ability to return to work after hip arthroscopy

A new study has identified factors that predict the ability of a professional dancer to return to professional performance after hip arthroscopy surgery. The study by Hospital for Special Surgery investigators will be presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual meeting, held Feb. 15-19 in San Diego, Calif.

New research: Incidence of PE after knee arthroscopy is 0.028%

Until now, the risk of pulmonary embolism after a knee arthroscopy has not been accurately defined and risk factors have only been suggested but not proven. New research, presented today at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons shows that the incidence of symptomatic PE after outpatient knee arthroscopy is .028 percent.

Patients receiving anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee reconstruction with a hamstring tendon graft rather than a knee tendon graft were less likely to suffer from pain and mobility issues15 years after surgery, say researchers presenting a study today at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Specialty Day in San Diego, California (February 19).

First implantation of Amedica/US Spine's Infinia silicon nitride ceramic femoral head performed in hip replacement

Amedica/US Spine, a spine and reconstructive implant and instrument manufacturer focused on unique silicon nitride (SiN) technologies, implanted its first silicon nitride total hip implant this week in the international marketplace. A patient at the George Provincial Hospital in Western Cape South Africa received the implant that uses an Infinia silicon nitride ceramic femoral head as part of the total implant.
