Sangamo's ZFP Therapeutics technology highlighted at ASGCT Annual Meeting

Sangamo BioSciences, Inc. announced today that data from research and preclinical programs focused on the development of zinc finger DNA-binding protein Therapeutics were described in fifteen presentations given by Sangamo scientists and collaborators at the 13th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy.

New technique designed to analyze individual immune cells may help diagnose food allergies: Study

About 30 percent of Americans believe they have food allergies. However, the actual number is far smaller, closer to 5 percent, according to a recent study commissioned by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. That's due in large part to the unreliability of the skin test that doctors commonly use to test for food allergies.

Scientists identify new gene candidates that regulate aggregate formations in Huntington's disease

They might not be known for their big brains, but fruit flies are helping to make scientists and doctors smarter about what causes Huntington's disease and how to treat it. New research, published in the journal GENETICS (http://www.genetics.org) describes a laboratory test that allows scientists to evaluate large numbers of fruit fly genes for a possible role in the formation of plaque-like protein aggregates within cells.

Women exposed prenatally to BPA or DES at increased risk of breast cancer: Study

A study in mice reveals that prenatal exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, like bisphenol-A and diethylstilbestrol, may program a fetus for life. Therefore, adult women who were exposed prenatally to BPA or DES could be at increased risk of breast cancer, according to a new study accepted for publication in Hormones & Cancer, a journal of The Endocrine Society.

Compatibility between donated kidney's weight and weight of recipient improves success of transplantation

Receiving an organ low in weight in relation to the recipient's body weight increases kidney transplant recipients risk of complications and transplant failure, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society Nephrology (JASN). The results suggest that compatibility between a donated kidney's weight and the weight of the recipient could improve the success of transplantation.
