An existing surgical robot could be used to perform complex regional anesthesia procedures—in theory, allowing expert anesthesiologists to perform robot-assisted procedures from remote locations, according to a study in the September issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, official journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS).

RAND Corporation study reveals shortage of anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists

A recent study from the RAND Corporation, one of the country's most trusted analytic organizations, finds a current shortage of 3,800 anesthesiologists and 1,282 nurse anesthetists. However, if current trends continue, a dramatic shortage of anesthesiologists and a significant surplus of nurse anesthetists are projected by 2020.

Hospira Japan receives approval for long term use of Precedex IV sedative

Hospira Japan Co., Ltd. today announced it has received an approval for the long-term (greater than 24 hour) use of the sedative "Precedex IV™200ug" (generic name: dexmedetomidine hydrochloride). This approval follows Hospira's first launches earlier this year of Precedex in Canada and in South Korea, important milestones for Hospira as the company continues to build the molecule's global presence.

Study finds black patients receive fewer opoid medications than whites

Black patients are prescribed fewer pain medications than whites and few women receive medications strong enough to manage their chronic pain, according to a study in the August issue of Journal of Pain.University of Michigan Health System researchers studied nearly 200 patients with chronic pain who sought help from a specialty pain center. Researchers analyzed the number and potency of medicines they were already taking and the adequacy of pain management.

Springer to publish ASENT's Neurotherapeutics journal

Beginning in 2011, Springer will publish Neurotherapeutics, the official Journal of the American Society for Experimental NeuroTherapeutics (ASENT). With the switch to Springer, Neurotherapeutics will change its format of publishing review articles only to offering original research articles as well. The journal achieved a debut Impact Factor of 5.38 in 2009, placing it in the top quartile of journals in both the Neurosciences and Pharmacology & Pharmacy categories.

Pluristem's PLacental eXpanded cell therapy effective against neuropathic and inflammatory nerve pain

Pluristem Therapeutics Inc. today announced the results of two separate pre-clinical studies in animal models which demonstrated that its PLacental eXpanded (PLX) cell therapy may be an effective treatment for both neuropathic and inflammatory nerve pain. These animal studies were conducted in collaboration with the Berlin-Brandenburg Center for Regenerative Therapies (BCRT) and the Department of Anesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine, both at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin of Berlin, Germany.

Cross Country Healthcare reports $117.8M revenue, $1.2M net income for second-quarter 2010

Cross Country Healthcare, Inc. today reported revenue of $117.8 million in the second quarter ended June 30, 2010, and net income of $1.2 million, or $0.04 per diluted share. This compares to revenue of $149.0 million in the prior year quarter and net income of $2.3 million, or $0.07 per diluted share. Cash flow from operations for the second quarter of 2010 was $13.4 million.

Research findings point to new ways to improve quality of future trials through better training

Practitioners of clinical medicine are familiar with learning curves, and strategies like simulation are increasingly used to minimize learning-curve effects on clinical care. Because similar learning curves have been hinted at in some clinical trials, researchers at Duke University Medical Center studied the phenomenon in the data record of a large, multi-site clinical trial. Their findings point to ways to improve the quality of future trials through better training and simulation exercises.
