Kinetic Concepts, Inc. today reported first quarter 2010 total revenue of $485.8 million, an increase of 3% from the first quarter of 2009. Foreign currency exchange movements favorably impacted total revenue for the first quarter of 2010 by 2% compared to the corresponding period of the prior year.

European commission's FP7 programme allocated euro 6.10 billion

Europe is moving towards becoming a knowledge-based economy. Keeping in line with this objective, the European commission has instituted the Framework 7 (FP7) programme. Launched to support the re-launched Lisbon strategy, FP7 focuses on research themes rather than the framework programmes of the past. It has been designed to meet some of the persisting challenges of raising Europe to match global excellence in research, thereby benefiting the European life science funding.

Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory have developed an imaging protocol that allows them to visualize the activity of the brain's reward circuitry in both normal individuals and those addicted to drugs. The technique could lead to better insight into why people take recreational drugs as well as help determine which treatment strategies might be most effective.

Norman Cousins first suggested the idea that humor and the associated laughter can benefit a person's health in the 1970s. His ground-breaking work, as a layperson diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, documented his use of laughter in treating himself—with medical approval and oversight—into remission.

Researchers at the Ansary Stem Cell Institute and the Department of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College discovered that mice missing a single gene developed repetitive obsessive-compulsive-like behaviors. The genetically altered mice, which behaved much like people with a certain type of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), could help scientists design new therapies for this debilitating condition.
