RUCDR Infinite Biologics receives $44.5 million Cooperative Agreement award from NIMH centre

RUCDR Infinite Biologics, the world's largest university-based biorepository, received a $44.5 million Cooperative Agreement award from the National Institute of Mental Health earlier this month to support its NIMH Center for Collaborative Genomics Research on Mental Disorders, which provides services to NIMH-funded scientists engaged in genomic research on mental disorders.

Forced elongation of telomeres promotes differentiation of cancer cells

Researchers from the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research in Tokyo have discovered that forced elongation of telomeres (extensions on the end of chromosomes) promotes the differentiation of cancer cells, probably reducing malignancy, which is strongly associated with a loss of cell differentiation.

Bacterial DNA more likely to integrate in the genome of tumors than in normal healthy cells

Bacterial DNA may integrate into the human genome more readily in tumors than in normal human tissue, according to a new study from the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Institute for Genome Sciences. Researchers analyzed genomic sequencing data available from the Human Genome Project, the 1,000 Genomes Project and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). They considered the phenomenon of lateral gene transfer (LGT), the transmission of genetic material between organisms in the absence of sex.

The predominant cause of death in cancer patients is metastasis, the formation of secondary tumors in other organs like the brain, liver, and lungs. Cancer cells detach from the original primary tumor and reach a single cell or group of cells in another organ. The cells of the body normally remain in place through adhering to an extracellular substance. However, cancer cells learn how to release themselves from these bonds and invade surrounding tissues, blood, and the lymphatic system.
