Nephropathy is a broad medical term used to denote disease or damage of the kidney, which can eventually result in kidney failure. The primary and most obvious functions of the kidney are to excrete any waste products and to regulate the water and acid-base balance of the body – therefore loss of kidney function is a potentially fatal condition.

Blood flow interruption during renal surgery can increase risk of chronic kidney disease

Interrupting the blood flow for more than 20 to 25 minutes during kidney cancer (http://www.mayoclinic.org/kidney-cancer/research.html) surgery leads to a greater risk for patients developing chronic kidney disease, a Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic collaborative research team has found. The study was published today in the journal, European Urology.

Widely used cancer drug bevacizumab can lead to proteinuria, kidney damage: Study

The widely used cancer drug bevacizumab may cause severe loss of protein from the kidney into the urine that can lead to significant kidney damage and can compromise the efficacy of cancer treatment, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. The results suggest that physicians should monitor patients' kidney health when prescribing this angiogenesis inhibitor.

Bevacizumab increases risk for proteinuria in cancer patients

Cancer patients treated with the chemotherapy agent bevacizumab (Avastin) may be at an increased risk of severe loss of protein from the kidney into the urine that can lead to significant kidney damage and can compromise the efficacy of cancer treatment. This conclusion stems from a study of more than 12,000 patients by Shenhong Wu, M.D., Ph.D., Principal Investigator, and colleagues at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Their findings are reported in online June 10 in the Journal of the American Society Nephrology (JASN).

Allopurinol exhibits potential benefits for CKD patients

A drug commonly used to treat gout may help maintain kidney disease patients' health, according to an analysis appearing in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN). The research is the first to show that allopurinol treatment in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) decreases inflammation, slows the progression of kidney disease, and reduces patients' risk of experiencing a cardiovascular event or being hospitalized.

UC emergency medicine assistant professor compares efficacy of two seizure medications to prevent SE

When seizures strike, the most immediate goal for caregivers is to get appropriate medication to the patient as quickly as possible to stop the seizing activity. In a paper published in the June Academic Emergency Medicine, UC emergency medicine assistant professor Jason McMullan, MD, found that the best means of stopping status epilepticus may be with the least direct medication.

Low-income African-Americans have higher risk of CKD: Research

African Americans with incomes below the poverty line have a significantly higher risk of chronic kidney disease than higher-income African-Americans or whites of any socioeconomic status, research led by scientists at Johns Hopkins and the National Institute on Aging shows. Conducted in a racially and socioeconomically diverse sample of participants from the city of Baltimore, Md., the study could help researchers eventually develop strategies to prevent CKD in vulnerable populations.

Scientists from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit presented data showing that by combining two treatment agents in the care of multiple myeloma patients, doctors can use higher dosages of chemotherapy before autologous stem cell transplant while alleviating painful and debilitating side effects like severe oral mucositis (mouth ulcers).

The subpoena relates to a civil investigation that was previously disclosed by the company during its earnings call on April 27, 2010, and in its quarterly report on form 10-Q for the period ended March 31, 2010.
