Pyrethroid insecticides linked to delayed mental development in children

When the EPA phased out the widespread residential use of chlorpyrifos and other organophosphorus (OP) insecticides in 2000-2001 because of risks to child neurodevelopment, these compounds were largely replaced with pyrethroid insecticides. But the safety of these replacement insecticides remained unclear, as they had never been evaluated for long-term neurotoxic effects after low-level exposure.

Despite fetal pulmonary maturity, babies delivered prior to 39 weeks are at risk

In a study to be presented today at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's (SMFM) annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting -, in San Francisco, researchers will present findings that show that despite fetal pulmonary maturity, babies delivered at between 36 to 38 weeks, still have a significantly increased risk of neonatal morbidities.

DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan receives ABA and ACS Burn Center Verification

Last year at the DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan, nearly 500 children were treated and admitted for burn injuries. As a result of the spectrum of quality care provided to burn patients from the pre-hospital phase through the rehabilitation process and having met rigorous standards for specific criteria set by the American Burn Association and the Committee on Trauma of the American Colleges of Surgeons, the DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan burn center is now the state's only verified pediatric burn center exclusively dedicated to the needs of children.

"Babies who are exposed to HIV at birth but don't become infected with the virus have lower levels of antibodies to diseases such as whooping cough, tetanus and pneumococcus," according to a study published in the Feb. 9 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), HealthDay News/U.S. News & World Report.
