SAMHSA awards grants to improve care for children with mental health challenges

Half of all lifetime cases of mental and substance use disorders begin by age 14 and three-fourths by age 24. Proven interventions can prevent future disorders and mitigate the symptoms. To support communities and help families with the best mental health services available for children, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is awarding nine new grants for a total of up to $70.9 million over the next six years to develop and expand systems of care for children and youth with serious mental health challenges and their families.

Pneumonia Report Card shows prevention, treatment tools not widely adopted in countries where disease kills most children

In advance of World Pneumonia Day, the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) on Thursday released a report card showing that pneumonia prevention and intervention targets are not being met in the 15 countries where three-quarters of deaths in children under age 5 from the disease occur each year, IRIN reports.

The must-have tween accessory of 2010 the collectible rubber bracelet helped Chili's Grill & Bar raise $5.6 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital this year. $1 from each $3, five-pack of chili pepper-shaped wrist bands sold benefited Chili's annual fundraiser to St. Jude, the nation's top ranked children's cancer hospital. The wrist bands proved so popular that they sold out in restaurants nationwide in less than 30 days.

Once final, these health warnings on cigarettes and in cigarette advertisements will be the most significant change in more than 25 years. Evidence suggesting that the risk of childhood asthma associated with prenatal paracetamol exposure may depend on antioxidant genes in the mother has been found by a team of UK scientists. The results of their study - which strengthens the argument for a causal link between paracetamol exposure in early life and later childhood asthma - are published online (10 November) in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
