Researchers discover inherited gene mutation linked to childhood leukemia

Researchers have discovered the first inherited gene mutation linked exclusively to acute lymphoblastic leukemia occurring in multiple relatives in individual families. The discovery of the PAX5 gene mutation was led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and others. The work appears in the current advance online edition of the scientific journal Nature Genetics.

Beverage coaster campaign reminds pregnant women on dangerous effects of alcohol

Before taking a sip of alcohol at nearly a dozen local bars and restaurants, San Diegans will be reminded of the dangers of mixing alcohol and pregnancy thanks to a beverage coaster campaign led by the new Southern California chapter of the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (SoCal NOFAS), in partnership with University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Children who live in "smart growth" neighborhoods get 46% more physical activity

Children who live in "smart growth" neighborhoods--developments that are designed to increase walkability and have more parks and green space areas--get 46 percent more moderate or vigorous physical activity than kids who live in conventional neighborhoods, finds a study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Household routines may be effective tool to reduce BMI in minority children

An intervention to improve household routines known to be associated with obesity increased sleep duration and reduced TV viewing among low-income, minority children, and the approach may be an effective tool to reduce body mass index (BMI) in that population, according to a study published by JAMA Pediatrics, a JAMA Network publication.

For the first time, a genetic link specific to risk of childhood leukemia has been identified, according to a team of researchers from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, University of Washington, and other institutions. The discovery was reported online today in the journal Nature Genetics.

Children's National receives grant to identify early signs of prenatal brain injury caused by CHD

Children's National Medical Center has received a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to identify reliable early signs of prenatal brain injury caused by congenital heart disease. Catherine Limperopoulos, PhD, Director of the Advanced Pediatric Brain Imaging Research Laboratory at Children's National will lead the study.
