U of T's Marialena Mouzaki named Best International Abstract Awardee by A.S.P.E.N.

Marialena Mouzaki, MD, MSc, an assistant professor at University of Toronto and a staff gastroenterologist at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, has been named the Best International Abstract Awardee by the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral. The award is for her research on pediatric end-stage liver disease that she will present at A.S.P.E.N.'s Clinical Nutrition Week scientific conference in Long Beach, California, February 14 to 17.

Between 5 and 8 million children in the United States have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), yet most cases go undiagnosed. To help address this issue, researchers at UC San Diego School of Medicine have developed a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based technique to help clinicians and researchers better detect and evaluate NAFLD in children.

BGI study tracks accuracy of NIFTY prenatal test

BGI has published a study tracking the clinical performance of its whole genome sequencing-based non-invasive prenatal test (the NIFTY test) in nearly 147,000 pregnancies, the largest such study to date. The results showed high sensitivity and specificity and no significant difference between high-risk and low-risk pregnant women.

Study: Lower-income students in China have better vision compared to middle-class counterparts

In one of the largest population-based studies ever conducted on nearsightedness in children, researchers have discovered that lower-income students in China have better vision than their middle-class counterparts. Data show that nearsightedness, also called myopia, is twice as prevalent in the middle-income province of Shaanxi compared to the poorer neighboring province of Gansu.

Study: Infant gut microbiota associated with healthy weight gain

Researchers in Singapore and UK as part of the EpiGen consortium worked together with scientists at the Nestlé Research Center, Switzerland, on a new study on the bacterial makeup of the gut (gut microbiota) of infants in Singapore. Their study reveals that the rate of bacterial colonisation of the gut is influenced by external factors such as the method of delivery and duration of gestation.

Transgender children live in alignment with their gender identity

A visible and growing number of transgender children in North America live in alignment with their gender identity rather than their natal sex, yet scientific research has largely ignored them. No longer, says Nicholas Eaton, PhD, an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Stony Brook University.
